Take a soldier in Germany with a wired service in military housing historically served by a provider such as TKS.

The call path, in simplified form, is as follows:
* the soldier picks up a wired handset or uses a voice-capable cable/fixed-line endpoint in the residence;
* the voice signal enters the local access connection from the premises into the provider’s access network;
* the provider authenticates and routes the call into its switching or voice platform;
* because the destination is abroad, the provider hands the call to a national or international carrier with onward capacity;
* the international carrier routes the call through major terrestrial backbones to a submarine cable landing station if the destination is on another continent;
* the voice stream crosses the ocean over an undersea cable, today usually as digital traffic on optical fiber;

The same physical and legal logic applies even if the called family members are distributed across different countries. Each destination country has its own terminating carrier; the originating provider only needs access into the worldwide interconnection and backbone system.

== From telephony to internet and broadband ==

The move from classic international telephony to internet and broadband did not erase this logic. It generalized it. Instead of reserving a dedicated circuit for the whole call, modern digital systems often carry voice as packetized traffic over broadband and backbone networks. The full historical significance of wired global telephony lies in the fact that it was never purely technical and never purely legal. It required both:
